Kapten Sam Cahill (Maguire) akan melaksanakan tugas militernya yang keempat, meninggalkan istrinya (Portman) dan dua anak mereka. Ketika helicopter Sam ditembak di pegunungan Afghanistan, semua orang menyangka Sam sudah tewas, sehingga saudara Sam, Tommy (Gyllenhaal) akhirnya yang mengurus keluarga Sam. Ketika ternyata Sam berhasil diselamatkan, ia kembali ke rumahnya dan yakin kalau istrinya telah jatuh cinta pada Tommy. Alhasil keluarga ini menjadi berantakan karenanya.

Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) is embarking on his fourth tour of duty, leaving behind his beloved wife (Portman) and two daughters. When Sam’s Blackhawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains of Afghanistan, the worst is presumed, leaving Sam’s ne’er-do-well brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) to step in and fill the sorrowful void. But when Sam is rescued by his company and returns home a broken man, he’s convinced that his wife has fallen in love with his brother, leading to consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family.
